The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has made a decision to reinstate Net Neutrality in the US.
A few days ago, the commission held a vote that led to a 3-2 win to reinstate Net Neutrality. Before the vote commenced, FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel said:
“Broadband is now an essential service. Essential services, the ones we count on in every aspect of modern life, have some basic oversight.”
The Chair also noted that broadband internet has become “nice to have, to need to have.”
Now that Net Neutrality is coming back, it will prevent ISPs from blocking/throttling traffic or charging extra for it. Providers also can’t prioritize certain internet traffic types, especially those heading to their own services.
This standard first became law in 2015 under the administration of President Barack Obama. When President Donald Trump took office, his appointed FCC Chair, Ajit Pai, dismantled the standard in 2017.
How do you feel about Net Neutrality coming back in the US?
