Who Says Cell Phones & Vacation Don’t Mix?

In Deer Valley, Utah they sure do - and this blog entry is coming to you from a picnic table at 9800 feet on my personal favorite Blackberry Curve 8300.

When I was a kid (way before everyone carried a cellphone, a wireless PDA or a blackberry), we always took ski vacation somewhere in the Rockies. I have “fond” memories of stopping constantly at the mid mountain lodge so my dad could use a payphone to call his office and check in; we were stuck standing in a crowded lobby with other families waiting for a turn on the payphone while all that fantastic ski time went wasted.

Well, not any more folks. Today the Moto RAZR cell phone, the Apple iPhone, the RIM Blackberry and the Palm Treo and many other mobile phones rule the mountain. Everyone - and really, I mean everyone - has a cellphone on this mountain. I have spotted more of the hottest Motorola, Samsung, Rim, Apple, and Nokia products here in Deer Valley and yesterday at Park City than at my local mall. Whether its taking pictures with an Apple iPhone, text messaging the lunch meeting spot with a Motorola RAZR, using a sleek looking Samsung Gleam cellphone at lunch to make a dinner reservation, looking at the trail map from a RIM Blackberry web browser or just chatting on your cellphone to someone stuck at the office, mobile phones are in full effect at this plush vacation spot.

Wifi, mobile, broadband and good old fashioned cellphones have fully integrated their way into the ski vacation.

Yes - cellphones and leisure time seem to be mixing just fine. My dad would be pleased to see all of these happy skiers in complete contact with the office via their mobile phones, returning emails with their Treos and Blackberries. It is agood thing that I can report that even way out in the mountains AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless all have really great wireless coverage and the wireless data coverage is just as good. I can’t speak for Sprint or Nextel as none of my fellow ski adventurers currently have those wireless carriers, but based on my knowledge of the industry, I’d bet that they both have stong wireless coverage here as well.

Who says cellphones and vacation don’t mix? Not this blackberry addict!

I like snowboarding while I talk on my cell phone as well. Swooshing down the mountain with my AT&T Blackberry Curve pinned to my ear is super cool. People think that it actually detracts from your vacation but I feel like I can relax more when I can access my AT&T BlackBerry Curve or use my Sprint Data Card to check up on things.

I hate being disconnected so I make sure that my AT&T wireless service works and if not I get a prepaid T-Mobile, Virgin or Sprint phone so I can talk. I found it much more relaxing to know that my family can find me on my Blackberry or Motorola phone while I am skiing or snowboarding.

To all of those people who are afraid to carry thier AT&T Apple iPhone onto the mountain because it might break, do not worry… I saw some boarder crush himself and then pull out his iPhone to photograph himself buried in snow. I am sure he posted it
