Let Your Cell Phone Be Your Guide

It seems like 90% of my text messages are either “Where are you? or “I’ll be right there or something similar. So I’m always on the lookout for useful mobile content - like using Google Calendar to text me reminders about appointments or getting Ticketmaster to alert me about concert tickets going on sale. That’s why I was happy to hear about 80108.com (no, I don’t know what it stands for - they are in Boston and the zip code is in Colorado).

You can select your location from a list of 25 cities with topics ranging from fashion to indie music to weather and sign up to receive text updates. The service currently supports 8 different mobile carriers. I love that it doesn’t just have cool things happening in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles - they also include Las Vegas, Portland, Atlanta, Charlotte, Boston, Cleveland, and Washington, DC (plus plenty of other places). You get a snippet of information about an upcoming event and can reply back for additional information.

I’m signed up for Washington but also plan on using it when I go on vacation to hear about what’s going on where I’ll be.
