My Favorite Gadget?

I’ve been in the wireless business since wireless came to the US. I’ve had unlimited opportunities to see all the different manufacturer’s cell phones and the features they offer. As an executive of a wireless retail company, I have access to cellular service from all the major carriers (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, Nextel and Alltel). Not to mention every handset manufacturer (Motorola, LG, Sanyo, Samsung, Blackberry, Sony Ericsson, etc).

I’ve played with and used many cellphones over the years and it may surprise you to know that my device of choice is the Blackberry Curve 8310. Why? Simple…it’s got it all! The Blackberry Curve is my phone, address book, calendar, camera, mp3 player and I can also access my corporate email and the Internet all on one device. Most people don’t use their Blackberry for music - but they should. I added a 4 GB memory card loaded with all my favorite music. The Curve sounds great with my Oakley Bluetooth stereo sunglasses! I’ve lost weight without going on a diet - my pockets and briefcase are no longer stuffed with a separate phone, PDA, camera, iPod and laptop.

The Blackberry Curve is a great asset for me. But if RIM enhanced the Blackberry with just one item, it would be the ultimate executive & personal tool for me. That one item is iTunes compatibility. Even as a kid, I had to have the latest and greatest of everything. So it was no surprise that when Apple came out with the iPhone, I had to have one the day it came out. But after a few days of playing with it, it now spends most of its time in my desk drawer…rarely used except for movies on long plane trips. I loved the graphic user interface on the iPhone, but the lack of compatibility with my corporate email, lack of blue tooth stereo and lack of 3G speed made the iPhone inferior to my trusted Blackberry Curve.

Is there anything currently on the market that can replace my Blackberry Curve 8310? I’m still that kid that’s looking for the latest and greatest, and for now, that’s the Blackberry Curve 8310.

You should take another look at the iPhone. In June the SDK and App store will be out, as well as corporate push email support. With AT&T building up lots of 3G infrastructure, a 3G compatible iPhone also can’t be too far off….I’ve personally never felt the iPhone being any slower than the other Windows Mobile or Blackberries I’ve used that are 3G, because 3G coverage areas are still mostly vaporware. AT&T seems to give me a much more stable connection that’s about the same speed everywhere rather than one that’s great in a few places, but awful everywhere else.

Rather than RIM having to convert music formats. Perhaps Apple should make their music available in an open platform such as MP3. BlackBerry is an open platform that supports all other open platform technology. It is perfect for developing custom applications and listening or watching media.

Why is apple so narrow minded?
