The future is here with Google's tap, pay, and save app - Google Wallet. Use this secure app to turn your near field technology (NFC) capable smartphone into a virtual wallet to make everyday purchases online as well as at your local retailers.

This finance-savvy app is preloaded on most compatible phones and also available to download for free from the Google Play store. It is simple to create an account and link credit cards, debit cards, loyalty cards, or gift cards. With 140,000+ retail locations, you are sure to find the Google Wallet logo wherever you shop- coffee shops, 7/11 stores, food trucks, and more. You can also use your Google Wallet when you see the MasterCard PayPass and Visa payWave logos, and most anywhere contactless payments are accepted. To complete an in-store purchase, just check-out like normal but leave your wallet in your purse. Instead, tap your phone against the logo. That's it.

In addition to making checkouts fast and easy, Google Wallet can also save you money. Eliminate the bulk of extra cards in your wallet or on your keychain by linking your store reward and loyalty cards to your Google Wallet app. You'll also find within the Google Wallet app discounts and great offers for your favorite stores. To redeem these offers, just scan the barcode on your smartphone's display or show the offer to your cashier.

Worried about security or fraud? Rest easy, you can manage your Google Wallet account and payments anytime from a desktop, tablet, or smartphone.  In an emergency (and losing your phone is always an emergency), you can quickly and easily disable the app remotely. If you still have a problem, Google Wallet Purchase Protection covers 100 percent of eligible, unauthorized Google Wallet transactions.

Google Wallet isn't just for in-store purchases - use it when shopping online, in Google Play store, and even within apps. Google Wallet is becoming universally accepted, it seems. Sure, you can use it in expected places like the Google Play store or Google Offers, but you can also use it in unexpected situations. For example, UBER is a popular, app-based car service here in Washington, DC. Google Wallet is accepted to pay your driver, via the app. You can also use Google Wallet to securely checkout online faster with Hilton Worldwide, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, and more. Your card number is never displayed or shared with the merchants.

The future of payment is here. Google Wallet and its competitors seem to be adding new retailers online and off every day. Soon you may be able to replace more than the credit cards in your wallet, will you be ready?  Remember, Google Wallet and other contactless payment apps require the use of an NFC-capable smartphone.

Here are some screenshot from Google showing how the app looks on your compatible smartphone. Wirefly's Scott Lewis took Google Wallet out for a spin at a local mall. Be sure to check out the video at the bottom of this post, where he shows you how easy it is to set-up a new account and get shopping.

Final Verdict

Google Wallet is a secure app that you can use not only to make purchases, but also replace those clunky loyalty/rewards store cards.
